Abstract

The collection of the Cantigas devoted to the Virgin Mary, which was promoted and compiled under the guidance of Alfonso X the Learned (1221-1284), is a repertoire created with the help of oral composition strategies like all medieval poetic-musical productions. On the basis of this premise, this study seeks to determine the relationship between Alfonso’s poems and their written reality by means of an analysis of the composition system that includes the interaction between text and melody. In the end, it is the melody, as the element which is in charge of transmission and which is architecturally responsible for the metric structuring (the original source of the rhythm’s flow and a direct consequence  of the arrangement of the modal degrees), which must fit – without necessarily corresponding – with the prosodic structure of the text.
