Abstract

This paper presents the contents of a conference given in the symposium on the Orchestra Pau Casals (OPC), which took place at the headquarters of the Institut d’Estudis Catalans on 30 November 2021. It gives a general description of the instrumental music in Catalonia in the period under study, covering both the ensembles which described themselves as orchestras and the respective musicians and their work, without discussing their repertoires. The spheres of religious music and of stage musics are not dealt with either. The paper goes on to specify the distribution of these ensembles throughout Catalonia. In particular, the time ranging from the decade preceding the creation of the OPC to the public presentation of the Barcelona Municipal Orchestra is covered, including the OPC’s entire period of activity.
