Abstract

This is a study of the terminological transition between the concepts of tenorist, singing master and chapel master according to the functions assumed by the music chapel’s director in the sphere of intonation and conduction of Gregorian chant before the music chapel’s statutory foundation, focusing on the data preserved on Barcelona Cathedral’s chapel masters in the 15th and 16th centuries. We analyze the particularities of the obligations and duties of the office of chapel master based on the documentation preserved in the Archive of the Barcelona Cathedral.
