The farsed epistles of saint stephen in catalan: a musical approach

Abstract

Farsed epistles are Mass epistles with tropes. These additions of text and music can be found at the beginning of the epistle, inside of it or at the end, combined with the original text. There are farsed epistles for particular feasts of the liturgical calendar, especially for Saint Stephen’s Day. The tropes may be in Latin or in vernacular, the new text being an extension, a paraphrase, and a beautification of the original text. The vernacular sources are the earliest evidence of the use of the vernacular in liturgy and, for this reason, they have been studied by specialist philologists of the various languages. In this paper we will delve into the Saint Stephen farsed epistles in Catalan, analyze them and compare them with each other and with other sources with which they share verses and music.
