Abstract

This article provides new information on the Catalan violinist Andreu Fortuny Fábregas (Sant Martí de Provençals, 1835 - Barcelona, 1884). This outstanding and little-known performer exemplifies, on the one hand, the profile shown by some of the musicians of the last half of the 19th century – versatile instrumentalists, teachers, arrangers and composers who devoted themselves to performing in the new places of entertainment where concerts were held. In addition to theaters, these places included the halls of recreational societies and, above all, the flourishing cafés converted into venues for cultural and artistic programming. On the other hand, in Andreu Fortuny we find certain peculiarities that gave him his distinctive personality as a violinist, such as his itinerant and bohemian lifestyle, and his peculiar interpretive style, which made him an original instrumentalist. The numerous bibliographical references on his artistic activity show that he enjoyed considerable popularity and recognition thanks to his concerts in theaters, in the settings of court society and in other popular places of entertainment frequented by both the general and specialized publics.
