Abstract

The musical holdings of Girona Cathedral contain a little-studied collection of 18th-century dances. It is a manuscript with thirteen dances for solo instrument and accompaniment, including mostly minuets but also other dances to which few references exist: the babau, the anteier, the tolla and the Prince’s Dance. The Girona document forms the starting point for a comparative study of these dances, drawing special attention to the babau but also to the anteier, through literary sources by authors such as Rafael d’Amat i Cortada and Francesc Tegell, and through the concordances with other contemporary sources.

Keywords: dances, babau, anteier, minuet, Girona, 18th century.
