Abstract

The study of the tonary Ripoll 74 aims to provide information on the learning of music and the medieval liturgy at the monastery of Santa Maria de Ripoll. The tonary is an educational book that helps to memorize and to remember the intonation of the chants of the offices and the Mass. Each tonary has a particular arrangement and in this paper we analyze in detail the tonary Ripoll 74 and its mnemonic elements, which provided students with help external to the chant allowing them to remember the incipit and thus to intonate the gradual, the antiphon or the introit, for example, in the correct mode. This study seeks to highlight, through a careful analysis of the tonary Ripoll 74, various theoretical-practical aspects of the medieval liturgical monodic chant of the Ripoll manuscript.
