Abstract

Catalonia has been both a producer and a recipient of a large number of piano brands since the beginning of the 19th century. The impact of this industry went hand in hand with the country's economic and social growth, reaching its peak at the turn of the 20th century. We do not have information on the number of pianos remaining at present, but we know that many instruments that are found in private homes are gradually being destroyed, due to either a lack of interest or an inability to keep them in good condition. The issue is more dramatic for pianos built prior to 1850, when the piano had yet to become standardised. At the Muzio Clementi Association of Barcelona, we have started a search for pianos with the aim of documenting this cultural heritage and collaborating on its protection. This is a prospective paper presenting what is meant to be the beginning of a research project covering a longer term.
