Abstract

This paper is a study of a manuscript songbook (FBB.Manuscrit.12) located in Olesa de Montserrat's Parish Archive. It seeks to contextualize the songbook historically as well as to locate the melodies of the tunes indicated in some titles (to the tune of) with the aim of joining them to the lyrics. By means of a study conducted from a literary perspective, together with the finding of similar songbooks and the study of the origin of the tunes (dances and tonadillas), we have been able to situate the repertoire within the literary and musical tradition of the 18th century-early 19th century and to locate several melodies. A metrical analysis of the lyrics and a formal and melodic-rhythmic analysis of the tunes have allowed us to offer proposals for joining six of the lyrics. Lastly, we reflect on how the repertoire fits in with the romantic ideal of traditional Catalan music expressed in the earliest publications on folk music.
