Abstract

Narcisa Freixas i Cruells (Sabadell, 1859 - Barcelona, 1926) was a Catalan musician and composer and the founder of the Cultura Musical Popular school of music. The winner of various prizes, in 1904 she became the first female composer to be performed by the Orfeó Català at the Palau de la Música Catalana. The Spanish Ministry for Public Instruction declared her works to be of didactic utility in 1919 thanks to their melodic purity, simplicity and educational value. Some of her Cançons per a infants (Children's Songs) are still familiar at present but her piano compositions have been forgotten and no studies or recordings have ever been made of them. In this paper a review is made of her piano legacy.
