Abstract

The very first version of Heinrich Ignaz Franz Biber's Missa Salisburgensis was recorded in 1974 not by an Austrian group of singers but rather by the celebrated Escolania (Boys' Choir) of Montserrat and this was not a matter of chance. For a long time this work, composed in the polyphonic style of early 17th-century Italy, was falsely attributed to Horazio Benevoli. This was a style which underwent great expansion and was imitated in all the European countries. Considering that Biber's instrumental compositions are fully consistent with the Southern German and Austrian Baroque tradition, and knowing that Biber never crossed the Alps, it is worth examining up to what point the Missa Salisburgensis fits in with a more transnational type of musical thought.
