Abstract

This paper is a study of Cererols' two magnificats for 9 and 10 voices, respectively, analyzing them, extracting their characteristics and setting them within the European musical context of the times, while at same time comparing them with the only magnificat conserved in Latin of the German composer Schütz. The following results are drawn from thestudy: the obvious stylistic difference between Cererols' two magnificats; the influence of composers such as Victoria, Palestrina, Gabrieli and Monteverdi on Cererols; the personal aspects shared by Cererols and Schütz; and the analogies and compositional differences between the two composers. Contribution: the possible entry route of the Roman-Palestrinian influence on Cererols; the contrast and justification of the analogies and differences between the instrumental palettes, the formal, textural and stylistic aspects, and the use of rhetorical-musical figures in the Cererols and Schütz magnificats; and the different interpretations according to their respective faiths. I conclude by demonstrating the Montserrat-Dresden-Venice/Rome triangulation, interrelating the radius of influences of the two composers.
