Abstract

In this paper we offer an approach to the professional and personal context of the Catalan soprano María Barrientos in her youth, when, in her early twenties, the singer had already become a diva of international renown. To do this, we propose the initial study of a small collection of letters sent to businessman José Bilbao between 1905 and 1906, now preserved at the National Library of Catalonia. The reading of these primary sources, parallel to the reading of a selection of newspaper sources of the time, is addressed to obtaining a better knowledge of the double context, occupational and private, of María Barrientos, a celebrated opera figure.
