Abstract

This paper deals with a musical manuscript on parchment with text and music. It was found in a folder containing notarial documents. The sheet on which it appears probably came from an 13th-century choir book. The musical notation is on a two-line staff with two clefs and the plainsong is written in square neumes. In the fourth system begins the chant of Beata Cecilia, of which the first stanza and half of the second have been preserved. What makes this manuscript so special is its perfect state of preservation, which allows a very accurate reading and transcription. Here we provide two possibilities of transcription in accordance with its period: one is Gregorian without measure, while the other is measured, reflecting the influences of organ song. The manuscript's geographicalsetting indicates that its provenance lies in the surroundings of the Monastery of Montserrat.
