Abstract

The Llibre Vermell of Montserrat, a sonorous crown of praises to the Virgin Mary. This article originated in a lecture that served as prelude to a concert devoted to the Llibre Vermell performed by the Capella Reial de Catalunya conducted by Jordi Savall; this important late-medieval codex was compiled. The author, after reviewing the sources for the traditional devotion to Montserrat and its rich iconography, comments upon each one of the ten pieces that constitute this codex, and he suggests the hypothesis that originally there were twelve pieces, pointing out also hitherto unnoticed numerological and symbolic aspects of these works. This article is conceived as an essay, and thus it makes use of poetic licenses in order to describe the musical beauty of this unique repertoire. The author stresses the importance of the use of art and music in the Middle Ages as vehicles for exegesis addressed to illiterate people, but who were very sensitive, and thus the artistic emotion came from the spiritual warmth provoked by the visual and aural evocation of the religious mysteries.
