Ferran Soldevila’s El milicià romàntic (1938). Introduction and Publication 87 Authors Francesc Foguet i Boreu Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona Enric Pujol i Casademont Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona Keywords: War and revolution of 1936-1939, Catalan theatre, political theatre, Catalanism, Ferran Soldevila Abstract taking place when it was written, as was Soldevila’s civil poetry. It thus reflects the concurrent claims for a dramaturgy of war and suggests an ethical interpretation of the historical process through which the defence of republican legitimacy was considered fair and necessary, given that it was the only cause that would allow democracy to be consolidated and might open up hopeful expectations for society. The militiaman Marçal, the hero of the play, matches the stylised prototype of the Catalanist combatants with working-class roots who trust in the triumph of the democratic forces in a dignified and idealistic way. The publication of El milicià romàntic is based on the seven-page typed version which has been conserved and is compared to the handwritten version —a previous draft— held in the Ferran Soldevila collection at the Archive of the Institut d’Estudis Catalans.Key Words: War and revolution of 1936-1939, Catalan theatre, political theatre, Catalanism, Ferran Soldevila Downloads Download data is not yet available.
