Abstract

Students from different educational levels are introduced into the procedures of the scientific method using a simple experience in which the rate of melting of ice cubes in different aqueous solutions is studied. It is a practical example to learn and discuss physicochemical concepts, as well as to promote active learning and skills training. It serves to motivate and also is a starting point to observe how properties of simple substances (water and sodium chloride) influence complex phenomena, such as thermohaline circulation of the oceans, caused by density gradients.
