How to distinguish the concepts of elemental substance and chemical element? The historical account and the experimental work Authors Josep Duran Universitat de Girona Fina Guitart Universitat de Barcelona Keywords: Substance, element, historical account, experimentation, learning scenario. Abstract The meaning attributed to the concepts of substance, element, and atom throughout history has been a key piece in the process of modeling the composition of matter and its transformations. The article proposes the use of the historical account and the realization of simple experiments that generate questions and evidence in a sequenceprogression to build knowledge from a learning situation in the context of sustainability, to empower students in making decisions and developing arguments based on the transformation of substances and the conservation of elements and atoms. Author Biographies Josep Duran, Universitat de Girona Professor titular de química a la Universitat de Girona i doctor en química per la mateixa universitat, on desenvolupa recerca en l’àmbit de la catàlisi.
