Teaching and learning the concept of chemical substance as pure material by high school students

Abstract

In view of spontaneous conceptions of the term substance presented by high school students, we investigate how teaching based on historical-cultural theory contributes to learning of the concept of chemical substance as pure material. Class dialogues were audio recorded, transcribed and analyzed. Results show how students started to learn the criterion of chemical purity and the chemical meaning of the substance, using them properly.

É licenciada em química e doutora em ensino, filosofia e história das ciências pela Universidade Federal da Bahia (UFBA)/ Universidade Estadual de Feira de Santana. Professora Assistente da Universidade do Estado da Bahia (UNEB). Tem experiência na área de ensino de ciências, atua no ensino da química e na investigação do ensino e da aprendizagem de conceitos científicos.

José Luis de Paula Barros Silva, Universidade Federal da Bahia

É químico e doutor em química pela Universidade Federal da Bahia (UFBA). Professor titular de físico-química aposentado da UFBA. Tem como campo principal de investigação o ensino e a aprendizagem de conceitos
químicos, com o aporte da história e da filosofia da química.
