To tackle this issue, the republican government of the first biennium (1931-1933) promoted the construction of new schools, the hiring of more teachers, and mandatory education. Additionally, it encouraged pedagogical renewal inspired by the New School movement and active pedagogy. Jaume Farré Vidal was one of these teachers committed to republicanism and educational modernization. His teaching career, documented between 1931 and 1938, includes his work in Rao (Lugo), Montgai (Lleida), as well as in Es Mercadal and Ferreries (Menorca). This information comes from two valuable documents found in the Municipal Archive of Es Mercadal. The first is a photo album containing family snapshots and images of his teaching activities. The second is an analysis of school absenteeism among the students in Rao, also presented in album format. Both documents are an excellent testament to the reform efforts of some republican teachers, among whom Jaume Farré Vidal stands out as one of the key introducers and promoters of Freinet pedagogy in Menorca.
