Abstract

The film La lengua de las mariposas [Butterfly’s Tongue], directed by José Luis Cuerda from the script by Rafael Azcona, interweaves three of the stories in the book Que me queres, amor? by Manolo Rivas by narrating, from the innocent look of the child Moncho (Pardal), a journey through everyday life in rural Galicia at the time of the Second Republic, which closes with the darkness of the Francoist dictatorship. Through this text we aim to develop “dialogues” between diverse sequences in the film and the history of recent education in Galicia ‒ focusing particularly on schools and on teachers ‒ attempting to contribute to raising awareness of cinematography as a resource for reading, debate, and historical understanding.

Key words: La lengua de las mariposas, cinema, Second Republic, school, History of Education.
