Abstract

Nowadays, more and more studies are analysing the privileged situation held by Lullian teaching at the University of Mallorca throughout the Modern Age. Actually, the presence of Ramon Llull on the island is an indisputable fact. Nevertheless, it is also true that Lullism teaching came up against, right from its beginnings, not a few obstacles. Since the foundation of the Universitat Lul·liana i Literària [Lullian and Literary University] in 1692, the Lay Brother’s doctrines were besieged by diverse difficulties, which sought their disappearance. This article aims, precisely, to raise awareness of the dangers that threatened the stability of Lullism during the 18th century; perhaps, its most difficult time. What is presented below is the most hidden, bitter face of university Lullism. To this end, emphasis will be placed on all the elements that contributed, to a greater or lesser extent, to hindering the great achievements attained in the Mallorcan academic world.

Key words: Lullian University, Mallorca, anti-Lullism, Bishops, Dominicans.
