When physical education arrives at primary school. Notes for the history of education in Lleida (1901-1931)

Abstract

In primary teaching in the Spanish education system, the official incorporation of physical education came at a late date. Even though the Law of 1901 planned the teaching of the subject of Corporal Exercises, in the state schools in Lleida, school physical education did not arrive until 1909. Until then, the difficulties in finding suitable teachers, the fact of not having ideal spaces for this teaching, and other ideological questions highlighted the contradictions of an incongruent education system. Through primary documentary sources this process is analysed and the underlying ideological discourse is revealed up to 1931, the time when the period of the ii Republic began.
