Resum

The purpose of this study is to establish the criteria that would allow the chronology of the Romance toponyms of lexical origin to be determined through the analysis of the special case of the Occitan toponyms of the Forn¨®¦Éls type. Accordingly, the philological, morphosyntactical (presence or absence of the article), lexicological (presence or absence in the common lexicon), morpholexical (analysis of the suffix in this formation) and phonetic criteria allow the period of formation of this toponymic type to be established with greater precision and a much more solid foundation than has been the case in reference works up to now. The toponymic type Forn¨®¦Éls, in particular, should be dated to between the 4th or 5th and the 6th or 7th centuries. Lastly, it is verified that the area where this toponymic type is found (areaologic criterion) coincides with the territory of the ancient Aquitania prima. This was a differentiated area which was prosperous in all respects precisely in the period that has been delimited as the time of appearance of this toponymic type, which would thus be a reflection of the regional success of a linguistic innovation that arose there.
