Abstract

The English original of this paper was prepared for the competition «Raising public awareness of mathematics» of the EMS, and appeared in the March 2004 issue of the EMS Newsletter. In it the author explains some modern versions of Gödels incompleteness theorem, where the incompleteness phenomenon is observed in some customary mathematical contexts, instead of the more formal metamathematical one, which is dominant in the traditional versions.
