Real machos and fake saints: Yo no tengo la culpa de haber nacido tan sexy by Eduardo Mendicutti, between the global and the local Authors Dieter Ingenschay Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin Keywords: Eduardo Mendicutti, camps aesthetics, pastiche of religious discourse, leather scene, globalization of gay life in Spain Abstract In Yo no tengo la culpa de haber nacido tan sexy (1997), Eduardo Mendicutti sends his still beautiful transexual protagonist, Rebecca de Windsor, on a pilgrimage to seven monasteries in search of religious perfection and the unification with the beloved Lord. The text unfords its camp aesthetics through a pastiche of styles and references to the mystical poetry of the Spanish baroque, particularly to its immediate intertext Las Moradas of Santa Teresa de Ávila. At the same time, Mendicutti describes the consequences of globalization of homosexual practices and makes a subject matter of the particularities of the "modern" gay/queer life in Spain at the end of the twentieth-century, twenty years after the dictator's death.
