In this article I will explore two questions with regard to the memoirs of war by the anarchist activist Sara Berenguer. First, I would like to look at the discursive strategies (class, gender, sexuality) constructing subjectivity in this text. In addition, I am interested in discussing how these discourses intersect with the spatial and temporal location (the time of memory and the time-space of exile) of the autobiographical subject. I aim to propose a problematization of the concepts of “collective memory” and “women’s experience” and stress, therefore, both the theoretical and political relevance of critical analyses based upon self-narratives.
