Abstract

This paper looks into the potential for the recognition of states and their integration into a host of regional and global international public law institutions in the specific cases of the secession of Scotland and Catalonia from the United Kingdom and Spain, respectively. The importance of the element of facticity is highlighted as it continues to define the establishment of a new state from the standpoint of international public law despite these secessions applying to democratic liberal contexts.
