Abstract

This paper has a threefold aim: to establish an identification and chronology of the local privileges of Llívia which are actually contained in the cartulary called Llibre ferrat, which rise from 17 to 25 and begin in 1289 instead of 1387; to shed light on the guiding chronological thread of the local privileges of Llívia as a whole, based on a total of 56 texts (published or cited to date) which range from the 12th to the 18th centuries; and to suggest that a possible reason for making the Llibre ferrat was the intention of reflecting, in a specific symbol, the image which the city wished to present of itself, more than to provide a legal instrument to be applied as such.
