Abstract

Following the Christian reconquest of Catalan regions in Terres de lEbre by Count Ramon Berenguer IV of Barcelona, both the castle and lands of Miravet were awarded to the Knights Templar, who became its lords. As the area was populated principally by people from Lleida, the laws of this city and territory were introduced, as illustrated by the town charters drawn up by the Templars and, also, by the laws of the area that became established here. Indeed, these laws came to have certain peculiarities that finally forced a review of the law and the drafting of a new code of customs that was formally awarded to the vassals in 1319 by the Hospitaller Order of Saint John of Jerusalem, the new lords of the Bailiwick of Miravet.
