Abstract

This paper looks into the history of several groups of legal professions in 11th-15th century France, including the jurists called causidicus, advocatus, iurisperitus and above all lawyers, but also notaries and mediators who helped the nobility to draft political treaties. It also presents biographical sketches of some important jurists, such as Auzias of Avignon, Giraud Amic, Oleguer of Tarragona, Bonaguida Aretinus (or of Arezzo) and, lastly, Ivo of Kermartin (or of Tréguier) Saint Ivo , the patron of lawyers in France to this day.
