Abstract

A few months after the start of the War of the Spanish Succession, the Queen Governor decided to separate from Catalonia the territories of the old vegueria of Tortosa and a good part of those of Lleida (May 31, 1706) to cede them to the Kingdom of Aragon; the objective was to guarantee loyalty to her husband, Philip V of Anjou. Once Tortosa and its vegueria were occupied, the King ordered that, until another decision was made and the entire Principality was under his control, the Royal Chancery of Valencia would be in charge of appeals and other matters related to the acts of the courts and institutions of Tortosa (May 25, 1709). After the conquest of Barcelona (September 11, 1714), various regulations enacted between 1715 and 1718 decided to reintegrate the territories of the ancient vegueria de Tortosa into the Principality of Catalonia and submit them to the jurisdiction of its new Royal Audience.
