Abstract

This article makes an historical synthesis of the Catalan municipal institution from its origins in the 13th century taking into account its precedents. It continues with the Bourbon municipality introduced following the New Plan of the Royal Court of Catalonia in 1716 (following the Philippian victory in the War of Succession to the Spanish Crown) and reaches up to the 19th century, with the liberal revolutions and their effects also on the legal-institutional order. Its composition and organization in each historical period, with its peculiarities, are examined.
