Abstract

At the end of the Old Regime, a century-old ecclesiastical controversy again faced the abbey of Montserrat against the bishopric of Vic, as the monastery considered that Monistrol and Santa Cecília depended exclusively on its jurisdiction nullius dioecesis. In this context, Reverend Lluís Francolí, vicar of Santa Cecília —the old and splendid Benedictine monastery that in the 18th century was only a small isolated and abandoned church within the municipality of Marganell—, received a visit from Francisco de Zamora, who in 1789 he commissioned the writing of the town's answers to his well-known «interrogatorio» (survey). The vision of the priest, who focuses his report on historical and ecclesiastical issues, allows us to capture the critical point of view with the monastery that had the secular clergy of the villages of the barony of Montserrat.
