Abstract

With the first Modernist approaches, one of the most urgent necessities was a renewal of poetry and separation from the nineteenth-century models. This was stated by the critic Ramon D. Perés, who called for an urgent modernisation of the Catalan poetry that would commence with an update of the form. Perés distinguished the models of the old school—full of falseness and anachronistic epic forms—from those of the new school—which seek a sincere, spontaneous and updated poetry, one prominent practitioner of which was Apel·les Mestres.
