Abstract

In a moral sense, ἀγωνία occupies a temporary space between the moment in which fear, restlessness and anguish start and the moment in which the denouement takes place. The epic poet creates ἀγωνία, according to the scholia, on specific moments of his story, a resource which sometimes has been considered as peculiar to tragedy. In rhetorical terms, the ἀγωνία is the risk that, by altering the order of the words, poets or orators create in the speech and also the effect that this alteration has on those who are listening.
