Traduccions catalanes dels clàssics en el tombant del segle XVIII al XIX Authors Maria Paredes Baulida DOI: 10.2436/20.2501.01.126 Keywords: Catalan translations of classics between the 18th and 19th centuries; Antoni Febrer i Cardona; Cicero; Phaedrus; Virgil. Abstract This paper attempts to situate in their socio-cultural context some Catalan translations of classical Latin authors produced during the last decades of the 18th century and the first decades of the 19th century in Menorca, due to the cultural normality that the language maintained on the island during the British and French dominations from 1713 until the end of the century, an exceptional situation in the entire linguistic field. David Causse, Joan Ramis and, especially, Antoni Febrer i Cardona, bequeathed unpublished translations of Ovid, Catullus, Cicero, Phaedrus and Virgil, some of them pioneering among those preserved in Catalan.
