Abstract

This paper examines the treatment of gastronomic contents in satire, especially when they are linked with the topic of the tenuis victus or simple life'. After briefly reviewing the possible influences of Greek gastronomic poetry on culinary satires, we focus on Horace's satire 2.2 and Juvenal's 11th satire both having the tenuis victus as the main theme. The treatment of the topic is compared with Furius Bibaculus' fragment 1 Blänsdorf. Finally, the question of the philosophical value of the motive as it appears in these poems is discussed.
