Abstract

The Institut d’Estudis Catalans (IEC) hosted from November 12, 2021 to April 1, 2022 the exhibition «Molecules that have changed our lives» (https://expo molecules.iec.cat/). The exhibition was organized with the aim of conveying to students that science is understandable and attractive, and essential for progress and for the improvement of the quality of life. The content of the exhibition, which was visited by about three thousand students, included ten panels dedicated to elements, compounds, and chemicals that have been essential in living longer and better: ammonia, anesthetics, cis-platinum, chlorine, silicon dioxide, nitroglycerin, penicillin, polyethylene, soaps and detergents, and vitamin C. To facilitate understanding to a wide audience and for reasons of terminological economics all of them have been designated as molecules.
