Abstract

This work is a part of the interdisciplinary project «Studying chemistry with Pliny the Elder», developed with 14-15 year old students to explore ancient scientific techniques. The project moves through some doubts and statements of Pliny the Elder and is divided into lessons. Each lesson begins discussing a selected passage of the Naturalis Historia, the context from which the learning process starts; then what is described in the text, or something similar, is recreated in the lab. Step by step, as a consequence of interplay between teacher and students, a tree structure set of demonstrations takes shape, whose purpose consists of reaching first year chemistry course goals. This activity concerns glass-making.
