The chemistry exam for the university entrance exam includes questions that require students to compare or justify a prediction by means of reasoning or explaning. This article reviews some typical responses obtained from the point of view of explanations used most by scholars and of the explanations that students tend to give, thus highlighting the importance of interpretative or causal explanations, based on models, compared to pseudoexplanations or explanations based on heu-ristic rules of little conceptual value.
