Química en contexto: un accidente químico y la reacción del sodio con el agua Authors Constantino Álvarez Muíña M. Elena López Prada Mercedes Neira González Mariano Pazos Afonso Abstract A maritime accident where a freighter carrying sodium sank, and which caused an environmental catastrophe, was used as the example for three laboratory experiments. These experiments highlighted different aspects of the reaction between sodium and water. In the first experiment, we attempted recreate a small scale version of the sinking of the freighter. In the second experiment, we used a controlled procedure to carry out the reaction and we observed the results. In the last experiment, we tried to find a quantitative use for the reaction.
