The historical evolution of the concept of chemical affinity: the continuing attempt to find an explanation for why chemical reactions occur
Keywords:
affinity, electrochemical dualistic theory, Gibbs’ energy, chemical potential, reactivityAbstract
To shape a narrative to attempt presenting in a clear simple way the historical process of understanding the cause of chemical reactions is an unattainable task. The historical account is very complex, bringing together different research pathways with multiple actors in quite different contexts and over many centuries. The authors have intended to keep a chronological account while selecting those episodes that we have considered most relevant. Our aim has been to provide the minimum number of historical references to help understand the historical evolution of ideas on the cause of chemical changes.
