Abstract We present a sequence of activities based on inquiry about a current context, «What happens to the coronavirus in the presence of soap?». The main objective is building the necessary chemical knowledge to differentiate between physical and chemical changes. This differentiation has generated controversy and difficulties described in educational research. The sequence is inspired by a theme from the history of Chemistry as a differentiation strategy: the fundamental chemical laws.
