Chemical compounds as medicines Authors Àngel Messeguer i Peypoch Institut de Química Avançada de Catalunya Keywords: Medicines, medicinal chemistry, active principle, excipient, dosage form. Abstract Chemical compounds are essential for health. Medicines are composed of chemical compounds (active principles from natural or synthetic origin, biomolecules and excipients, depending on the administration forms). In their manufacture, medicines should follow highly rigorous controls to assure efficacy and safety. These guarantees should be validated by international agencies such as the American FDA or the European Medicament Agency before authorising that any medicine could be administered to patients. Similar criteria should prevail for the rational use of medicines by consumers in order to avoid undesirable secondary effects for health.keywords: Medicines, medicinal chemistry, active principle, excipient, dosage form.
