Abstract

Casa Albets is a listed 11th-century masia or traditional Catalan farmhouse located in a secluded landscape in Lladurs (Solsonès region). The project's objective is to convert this farmhouse into an ecological vegan 4-star hotel and this is what determines the character of the architectural intervention in all respects. Casa Albets consists of several buildings forming a whole: the hotel is set in the main structure of the masia and the owners' and managers' house is in the smaller structure. The rest of the buildings of the complex are sheds which organize the outdoor space and are devoted to complementary uses. One of the main decisions has been to maintain the open spaces of the central rooms so that the hotel can keep the original functional distribution of the old Catalan farmhouse. The materials have been chosen with total respect for all the original elements and the new interventions will be highlighted by a careful selection of materials such as black steel and timber obtained from the property's oak forests. Self-sufficiency and sustainability have been taken into account in the construction, seeking to save energy and achieve the highest energy efficiency qualification. For the landscaping, several actions were implemented to foster the property's biodiversity, including the creation of suitable habitats for different species
