Experiències amb la varietat carinyena a l'Empordà Authors Joan Fabra-Viñas Abstract The Carinyena grape has long been closely related to winemaking in the Empordà region. Before the phylloxera epidemic, it was considered a variety that produced high-quality wines in the region. In the 1980s and 1990s, with the aim of diversifying the varieties and improving the wines of the area, it was not given the importance it had enjoyed in the past and many of the Carinyena vines were lost. Making a study of the variety, it is observed that the behaviour of the plant and the quality of its grapes are strongly influenced by the type of soil. During the 20th century, the vineyards of the Empordà region moved down from the hills to the plain, and with the change of location the quality produced by the Carinyena vine was affected and the variety became unjustly disdained. The challenges of climate change, the reappraisal of the heritage of autochthonous varieties and the perfect adaptation to both the climatology and the region's granite and slate soils make Carinyena a variety with a promising future for the wine trade in the Empordà region.
