Carinyena is the third most popularvariety in Vitis Catalana. Bibliographic references show that it is a variety present throughout Catalonia, but above all in the lands of Tarragona. The most commonly used name is Carinyena (or Cariñena) and the oldest mention on record is from 1785. Vitis Catalana also includes the presence of varieties related to Carignan and its synonyms, such as Carinyena Blanca, Mazuelo, Cruxilló and Samsó (Carinyena).
