Abstract

A review of the genus Stagetus Wollaston, 1861, from continental Africa, has been done with specimens from the collections of the Museu de Transvaal Museum of Pretoria and the A. Viñolas, Barcelona. Seven new species are described, S. mateui sp. n. from Rwanda, S. krugerensis sp. n., S. kwazuluensis sp. n., S. karrooensis sp. n., S. muellerae sp. n. and S. sederbergeensis sp. n. from South Africa and S. willowmoreensis sp. n. from Namibia and South Africa. A specific key of the genus in Continental Africa is provided as well as the distribution area of the examined species. In the Iberian Peninsula the presence of S. championi (Schilsky, 1899) is confirmed and for the first time S. byrrhoides (Mulsant & Rey, 1861) is recorded. In addition, the geographic distribution of the rest of species in the peninsular area is widened. Stagetus montanus Toskina, 1998, from Saudi Arabia and Oman, is a syn. n. of Stagetus pellitus (Chevrolat, 1859), already known in the Arabian peninsula. Falsostagetus bellamyi gen. n., sp. n. and F. messinaensis sp. n. This genus should be situated in the section Stagetus Wollaston (Español, 1977b). It is well characterized by elytra without traces of strias, nor series of points and by certain details in the ventral morphology and in the aedeagus.
