Abstract

A study of the dung beetles (Coleoptera, Scarabaeoidea) of the Sierra de Salinas and Sierra de Onil in the province of Alicante The annual cycles of dung beetle communities in the Mediterranean ecosystems of the Sierra de Salinas and Sierra de Onil in the interior of the province of Alicante were compared. In addition, a comparative analysis of the beetle communities feeding on two very different types of excrement, cattle and rabbit, was carried out from early March to the end of June, the period during which most of the activity of the imago takes place in nearly all the species. To obtain better information about the structure and composition of the two types of dung beetle assemblage and determine whether some species are especially or exclusively linked to rabbit latrines, two sampling methods were used: (1) hand collection of soil cores under rabbit latrines, extracting all the beetles in the laboratory, and (2) pitfall traps baited with cattle dung.
